Ubon Ratchathani –

More than 200 tons of rubber pellets worth more than 13 million baht were destroyed following a massive blaze breaking out at a rubber plant factory in Ubon Ratchathani yesterday, October 10.

Police from the Dech-Udom Police Station and firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving a report of the fire incident in the Dech-Udom district around 2:00 PM yesterday.

A large cloud of black smoke was seen pouring out from one of the three rubber plant storage buildings which reportedly stored about 200 tons of rubber pellets. A team of firefighters quickly sprayed extinguishing foam and water over the fire to prevent the spread of the blaze to other portions of the sprawling rubber plant complex.

Fire fighting officers spent approximately three hours to contain the fire and bring it under control. No casualties or injuries were reported.

An initial examination revealed that a significant amount of rubber pellets inside the heavily burned storage buildings as well as a company pickup truck, loader cars, and employee break rooms were destroyed by the fire.

According to an employee, the fire had started shortly after he heard an explosion and smelled strong smoke coming out from the storage facility. He then hurried to tell his co-workers to evacuate from the factory and alerted the authorities.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Suwan Praengngam, the Deputy Investigation Officer from the Dech-Udom Police Station, told the press that the authorities initially assumed that the fire was caused by a short circuit inside the storage.

However, they would continue an investigation to summarize the actual cause of the incident. The factory owner as well as their employees will also be questioned for further details at the police station.
