Royal Thai army steps up Covid-19 prevention measures at Myanmar border

Thailand-

The Thai army is stepping up Covid-19 prevention related measures at the Myanmar border out of precaution after several cases were reported in the Mae Sot region of Tak province earlier this weekend.

First, get caught up on the current Covid-19 situation in the Tak province by reading our previous coverage here.

This weekend, The Royal Thai Army Commander in Chief, General Narongpan Jittkaewtae ordered Royal Thai Army units in border areas to step up prevention measures at 22 border crossings across Thailand. Special emphasis, however, is on Myanmar due to an outbreak of the Covid-19 disease in the country.

The units will be working primarily at quarantine facilities as well as providing face masks, guidance for local residents and officials and assisting as needed at medical facilities.

The Army is also delivering supplies to residents who have been asked to stay home out of precaution in affected areas such as the Mae Sot border area.

The Department of Public Health has stressed that the situation in Tak is under control and have taken several preventative measures, such as hard closing borders, even for supplies, for a week, stopping mass gatherings including religious gatherings and closing some education centers and hospitality businesses where people could potentially gather. They have also quarantined all close contacts of the previously five confirmed Covid-19 cases in Tak who are all members of the same family and are Myanmar nationals who legally reside in Thailand.
