A single South Korean military soldier has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus after performing a military planning session with Thailand for the upcoming Cobra Gold exercise between November 2nd to the 6th in the Ban Chang District of Rayong, the public health ministry revealed this morning.
According to the ministry, the authorities were alerted of the positive Covid-19 case on Monday, November 9, after the Korean Armed Forces had returned to their home country last week and were required to test for the Covid-19 coronavirus at a South Korean airport.
The five-day Cobra Gold training and planning session and military meeting included a total of 202 Thai and foreign army authorities; 12 from the United States, 5 from South Korea, 2 from Indonesia, 2 from Australia and 1 soldier each from Singapore, Japan, China, and India. All of them reportedly had lunch and dinner together at a dining hall in the Ban Chang district.
Prior to their arrival, all of the foreign soldiers had reportedly tested negative for the deadly virus twice during a mandatory 14-day quarantine before joining the military session.
The Public Health Ministry and the Cobra Gold army participants have advised all Thai and foreign personnel who had recently been involved with the military training and meeting to conduct a state quarantine or a self-quarantine and monitor their symptoms closely.
A group of Thai personnel that had been in close contact with the South Korean army is required to conduct quarantine for 14 days while a group that does not have direct contact with the military patient and meeting attendees must conduct a self-quarantine at home for 14 days to observe the symptoms and report to the health officers.
Officials are asking residents of Rayong not to panic as they investigate the case and ask for further testing from the South Korean soldier. Officials also stated that it is not yet clear if the soldier had the infection before coming to Thailand.
