Cabinet gives green light for law amendment to allow abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy

The Thailand cabinet today (November 17th ) has approved to amend the previous criminal law which will allow a woman to have an abortion who is pregnant not more than 12 weeks (3 months).

Government deputy spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek told Associated Thai press today, “The cabinet has approved to amend the law of abortion in the Thailand Criminal Code.”

“Section 301 for women who are not more than 12 weeks pregnant can be legally aborted.”

“This period of pregnancy is a safe period for abortion confirmed by the Medical Council of Thailand and The Royal Thai College of the Obstetricians and Gynecologists.” Ratchada concluded.

However, the punishment for more than 12 weeks pregnant abortion will be imprisonment up to six months or a fine up to 10,000 baht or both.

It was not made immediately clear when the new law would take effect.
