Two Buddhist monks and three fellows arrested for allegedly smuggling 4.8 million meth pills before delivering them to clients in Chainat province

A Buddhist abbot, a Buddhist monk, and three of their fellows from the Phayao temple were arrested on Saturday, November 21, at a hotel in Chainat after allegedly being involved in smuggling 4,800,000 meth pills to a client in the province.

Police from the Patrol and Special Operation Division received a tip-off, stating that there was a major drug smuggling from the north using a pickup truck with a group of Buddhist monks to deliver the drugs to their clients in the ​​Manorom District of Chainat Province between 7:00 PM. to 10:30 PM.

The monks were believed to be involved in order to avoid being stopped at police checkpoints and to cover up the drug smuggling, according to the police authorities.

Police investigation revealed that the alleged smugglers had arrived in the province around 7:00 PM and were staying at a hotel for a night. The official raid eventually captured five alleged drug dealers, originally from the northern provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Phayao, as well as a total of 4,800,000 meth pills.

Two cars, 11 mobile phones, a .45 caliber Glock firearms, and 14 cases of ammunition were discovered and confiscated. All of them were taken to the Patrol and Special Operation Division for legal proceedings. The monks will also be defrocked and removed from the monkhood, according to authorities.

The group was facing several charges of possessing and/or selling Category 1 Substances (Methamphetamine). One of them was charged for possessing firearms and ammunition without permission.
