Bangkok –

Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and related tourism business associations are planning to submit a petition to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to reopen the country and  propose a “Guangzhou-Phuket” tourism route to overcome the Covid-19 recession.

Narongsak Puttapornmongkol, President of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, revealed yesterday, November 30th, that the letter will be delivered to the CCSA this week after meetings with associations related to the tourism industry, including hotel businesses, entertainment, hospitality, restaurants and related service businesses.

The associations request more tourist measures to be applied with countries or cities with low cases of the Covid-19 pandemic and seek a “Travel Bubble” package with parts of China. The petition reportedly proposes about 20 cities that have no reports of the Covid-19 local infection, particularly Guangzhou as it has been a Covid-free and tourist-friendly city in all aspects. Guanghzhou has previously been one of the top locations providing Chinese tourists for Thailand, added the Chamber of Commerce.

The package should be paired with Phuket, according to their request, as every tourism-related operator on the island have been severely and economically affected, which might become more financially dangerous if the country’s borders remain closed for non-essential travel.

The potential reduction of mandatory state quarantine will also be mentioned to the CCSA as the group believes that it would tremendously and beneficially attract more tourists around the world, not particularly just the Chinese.

“The government should also prioritize the economic impact of Covid-19, not only the case of the local transmission, which is very low numbers. The country has been universally known for professionally handling the Covid-19 cases and its treatment to cure infected patients, so we think the Travel Bubble is possible,” Narongsak stated.

He added: “Those who wish to travel to Thailand could also present their vaccination certificate or examination reports from the place of origin. The reduction of the state quarantine period is likely as well if Thailand is planning to welcome more tourists, especially the Chinese who have shown their interest to visit the country. We believe that the Travel Bubble and the quarantine reduction will resolve the tourism business, which is a huge economic opportunity to recover.”
