Nakhon Si Thammarat –
At least 5 people were reportedly killed and more than 100,000 households were suffering as heavy forest floods triggered by constant heavy rain has battered 19 large sub-districts in Nakhon Si Thammarat yesterday, December 2, affecting hundreds of local communities and inundating large areas of farmland, according to the Nakhon Si Thammarat PR office.
Governor Kraisorn Wisitwong along with provincial disaster mitigation officers and volunteers had rescued locals in several districts to evacuate them for 24 hours and provided swift assistance to the affected area. The notification of the floodwater situation had also been constantly announced to the public for preparation.
The hardest hit areas and sub-districts, according to the Governor, are Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat District, Phra Phrom District, Chian Yai District, Chalerm Prakiat District, Lan Saka District, Noppitam District and the Tha Sala District. Local authorities and volunteers are now visiting the areas to provide assistance and distribute food and water supplies.
As of this morning, 942 villages across 19 districts were flooded – affecting 114 communities and more than 180,000 people. Five residents from Noppitum, Phra Phrom, Chalerm Prakiat, and Chawang district were unfortunately killed during the flash floods.
A total of 475,306 rai of farmland were reportedly inundated, with a huge loss of hundreds of crops and farm animals. Authorities are still calculating the flood’s overall impact on the area.
