Seven pro-democracy activists summoned to Nonthaburi and Bangkok police station to acknowledge lése majesté charges

Nonthaburi –

Four prominent pro-democracy activists, namely Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, Panupong “Mike” Jadnok, and Shinawat “Bright” Chankrachang, were summoned to Nonthaburi Police Station today, December 8, for hearing their lése majesté charges.

The charges were against them over their pro-democracy demonstration at Nonthaburi pier on September 10. There was alleged mockery and insults against the royal institution during the rally, according to station chief Police Colonel Seehadet Sakobkaew.

Mike told the press prior to the hearing that the government is using the harsh lése majesté law to silence dissidents. However, the use of Section 112 will only lead to more discussion against the monarchy and more support for the democracy movement according to his opinion.

The Pattaya News noted that this is the third and fourth time for Rung and Penguin, respectively, to face lése majesté charges since the pro-democracy movement began in June.

Meanwhile, another pro-democracy activist, Patsaravalee “Mind” Tanakitvibulpon, was also summoned this morning at Thung Mahamek police station in Bangkok to acknowledge similar charges under Section 112 of the Criminal Code over a rally outside the German embassy on October 26.

At Chana Songkhram police station, Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattarasaksa and Somyot Prueksakasemsuk were also charged with lése majesté over their major pro-democracy rally at Sanam Luang ground on September 19 and the 20th.

All of them were released two hours later after the hearings. The detention process has not yet been requested but the accused activists will be summoned again after the investigation is complete, the police stated.

Speaking after, the activists also announced an upcoming pro-democracy movement on December 10, the so-called Constitution Day, with a campaign to revoke Section 112 and invited protesters to join the rally at the October 14 Monument on Ratchadumnoen road.
