Bangkok –
Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, one of several prominent pro-democracy protest leaders, announced on his social media platforms yesterday afternoon, December 11th, the end of the volunteer protest guards’ duty in the “People’s group” in order to maintain the core value of a ‘peaceful’ protest in the democratic movement.
The guard call-off is also, according to Parit, to prevent the government attempting to interfere and provoke violence during the battle for democracy, according to his statement.
Instead, the pro-democracy leaders and the “People’s Group” will organize a group of highly trained and skilled professionals to facilitate every protester in the next planned gatherings in 2021.
Read his statement in English, translated by the Pattaya News team, below:
“Dear friends who join the battle and brothers and sisters who share the path to true democracy,
First of all, the “People’s” group would like to thank everyone for the support and kindness and for joining the fight against injustice without giving up. Even on many occasions, we face obstacles from those who do not wish and do not want to see the victory of the people.
And thank you for your feedback in every gathering and its atmosphere in every movement we have done which we always listen to and take them for future improvements.
Therefore, in order to maintain a positive atmosphere in “peaceful” assembly, which has always been a vital “weapon” in our road to democracy as well as being a shield against the state power and feudalism that tries to ruin our ideology, The “People’s Group” hereby announces the termination of all of the volunteer guards in our movements. The organizers will organize a team of highly trained and skilled professionals to facilitate our protesters at the next gathering.
We believe that people who gathered at the protesters in peace can protect themselves, each other, and the protest as a whole. The duties should not be a burden on the guards, as we have seen in many recent protests. We would also like to thank you all volunteer guards in all groups once again.
However, on this long and intense battle path to true democracy, there are still many goals that we essentially need you and your kindness and all people in volunteering to join the road together which we will announce in the future.”
The Pattaya News notes that in recent gatherings disputes between various factions of the volunteer guards had been reported, including some that had led to scuffles and some groups resigning from the protests. Some factions of volunteer guards also appeared, according to multiple observers, to be provoking authorities, vandalizing property and other actions that were against the core values of the protesters to hold peaceful, democratic protests.
