Thai Cabinet sets goal of at least 5 percent accident reduction plan for New Years in “red zones”

Bangkok, Thailand-

The Thai Cabinet today set a goal with a road accident reduction plan for New Years in Thailand at least at 5 percent reduction of the past three years average number in areas called red zones, which are provinces and places with high numbers of accidents.

This goal is, The Pattaya News notes, significantly more down to earth than statements made by some areas, including Phuket, stating the goal for accidents on New Years was zero, a goal that many feel is unattainable even with the strictest of measures implemented.

The Deputy Government Spokeswoman, Traisuree Taisaranakul, told the gathered media following the Thai Cabinet meeting this week that the goal was to reduce accidents overall during the New Year’s celebrations but that special effort would be made on areas where high numbers of accidents took place. The complete list of “red zones” was not given at the conference.

This years plan also has a slogan, according to the spokeswoman, which is “New Normal, Drive Safely, No Accidents”.

The plan will be composed of measures with both local and regional authorities and include a number of different organizations, not just law enforcement, according to Traisuree. The plan will also focus on education around not driving while intoxicated which will be on multiple media outlets leading up to the holiday.
