Rayong authorities announced 49 new confirmed local cases of the Covid-19 Coronavirus this afternoon, December 27th, making a total of 85 domestic cases in the province during the second major cluster of infections in Thailand of the pandemic this year.
Channa Iamsaeng, Governor of Rayong province, told the associated press that the new cases were recently confirmed by local authorities and have not yet been reported to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
All 49 patients will be transferred to the provincial medical center where they will be quarantined and need to be confirmed for results again as there is a chance that they may be inaccurate for the first time, according to the governor.
Deputy health minister Satit Pituthecha said that more strict health measures from the Public Health Ministry will be implemented in the province to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and might be affecting some local businesses and vendors. The health officials will also insist to provide the Covid-19 test for about 400 people daily to seek for possible infected patients. All the cases are in the Mueang Rayong sub-district which has entered a highly controlled status and seen the closure of non essential businesses. This technically takes effect tomorrow, December 28th until at least January 10th. Beaches remain open although Rayong has not clarified the status of business on Koh Samet. The sub-district however is not on a lockdown in terms of travel and people may enter and leave the area.
Regarding an alleged illegal gambling den where a batch of gamblers was shockingly found infected yesterday, Police Major General Paphatdet Ketphan of Rayong provincial police clarified that there were no gambling dens in Rayong but rather was a domestic place that was operated for illegal gambling activities.
“Only 7 people from a domestic gambling place, not den, were found positive for Covid-19, not 36 as claimed by several media channels yesterday but the number has reached 36 patients from transmission of the seven patients.” said the police general.
Provincial police will also assist public health officials in facilitating the screening process for Covid-19. Meanwhile, they will keep monitoring and take legal actions against illegal gambling activities in the province.
