Fourteen pro-democracy activists summoned to Bangkok police station for hearing sedition charges over overnight rally in September last year

Bangkok –

Fourteen pro-democracy activists, led by Attapon Buapat, were summoned today, January 14th, at the Chana Songkhram police station to acknowledge an additional charge of sedition over their political roles during an overnight demonstration at Thammasat University and Sanam Luang on September 19th and the 20th, 2020.

Police Colonel Sanong Saengmanee, Superintendent of Chana Songkhram Police Station, revealed that the investigation officer has called certain members of the pro-democracy group to acknowledge the charge under Section 116 of the Criminal Code.

The massive gathering of pro-democracy activists on September 19 and the 20th was the first of a two-day rally with thousands of people gathering at Sanam Luang after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha took power in a 2014 coup.

The demonstration also involved the installation of a symbolic democracy plaque, marking what the protesters called a new symbolic icon of the pro-democracy movement that has been widely used among the activists.

Prominent pro-democracy speaker Attapon Buapat later told reporters that he denied the charges and would file his written statement later, claiming that the authorities are attempting to pressure pro-democracy leaders until they are drowned out.

“We know what we have to go through since the first day we stepped out of our comfort zone to participate in the gatherings. However, my friends and I will continue to refuse all charges against us according to the legal advice of our lawyers from the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights Center,” he concluded.
