The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and public and private tourism sectors are seeking ways to attract foreign tourists again after the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic subsides, one including a proposal for welcoming vaccinated tourists without performing a 14-day state quarantine.
The Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn revealed to the press yesterday, February 1st, that the Ministry estimated about 5 to 10 million foreigners to visit Thailand after the border reopening, which is aimed to be sometime after Songkran. However, the number will also partially depend on each foreign country and its tourism regulations as well as the overall Covid19 status around the world.
Phiphat also said that he was preparing to discuss with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha to request 5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for hospitality employees, including restaurant and hotel employees working in 7 major tourist cities, namely Chonburi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, and Songkhla, in order to build confidence for tourists prior to the country reopening.
TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn further stated that TAT urged the need for vaccinated foreigners to visit Thailand. The Thai government will also discuss with the ASEAN National Tourism Organization (NTO) around issuing a ‘vaccination passport’ for authorized vaccinated tourists, who will be able to enter Thailand and other ASEAN countries with quarantine-free travel.
Moreover, William Ellwood Heinecke, Chairman of the Minor International Board, has also submitted a detailed document with four related-tourism proposals to the Prime Minister, which include 1.) including hospitality staff in Phase 1 of vaccine distribution, 2.) consider more vaccine options as a matter of urgency, 3.) allow quarantine-free travel for vaccinated people, and 4.) prepare to welcome incoming international travelers with ‘vaccination passports’.
