National –
Thailand’s Excise Department is planning to propose a new tobacco taxation adjustment to help solve major problems, including the smuggling of illegal tobacco products into the country.
Department Director-General Lawan Saengsanit revealed that the proposal will be introduced to the Financial Minister before being discussed at a future Thai cabinet meeting, approximately in March.
The proposal aims to solve the problem of the smuggling of illegal tobacco products from abroad as well as to stress the well being of the people from tobacco-related health issues, stress the income of Thai tobacco farmers, and maintain the revenue the government makes in income from legal tobacco sales.
According to the Director-General, the adjustment is expected to be finalized by the government by this October before being signed into law in the fiscal year 2022.
The illegal sale of black market cigarettes in recent years has been commonly discovered online via various social media platforms. Its popularity has caused the government a tremendous loss of 11.26 million baht in revenue from tobacco sale tax, according to the Director-General.
The Excise Department, therefore, would continue their investigative approach to identify the prosecutors behind this illegal operation, Lawan noted.
