Phayao provincial governor passes away from cancer

Phayao, Thailand-

The Phayao Provincial Governor,  Kamol Chiangwong, reportedly passed away from cancer last night at Phayao hospital.

Phayao is located in upper Northern Thailand near Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Up until 1977, the province was part of Chiang Rai for eighty years until it was separated. The province also borders Laos in the Northeast. The province is known for Wat Si Khom Kham which has the largest Buddha statue of Lanna Thai, also known as Phra Chao Ton Luang. The area is also known for Doi Luang national park.

The governor, who was 59 years old, had been battling metastatic biliary tract cancer since January 27th, 2021. He was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit at 8:49 P.M. last night, February 13th, 2021 at the Phayao Siri Hospital. Doctors reportedly said the governor passed away peacefully.

A royal bathing ceremony is due to take place this evening at Wat Sri Khom Kham in the Mueang Phayao district and a cremation ceremony is scheduled for February 20th. Instead of wreaths or donations, the province has requested those that wish to assist donate medical supplies and materials to the Phayao hospital instead.

The Governor had been in the position since October 2019 and had previously served as the Deputy Governor of Nan, Samut Prakan, and Roi Et.
