A group of 59 Western tourists arrived at Phuket International Airport earlier this week, February 21st, to participate in Thailand’s first ‘Villa Quarantine’ at the Sri Panwa luxury residence on the island, according to Thai authorities.
This limited group of foreigners was officially approved by a Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) meeting. They are scheduled to spend their 14-day state quarantine at the hotel solely.
Prior to their arrival, senior officers from the Phuket International Airport, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and Provincial Public Health, as well as related officials have thoroughly inspected the airport areas, particularly the Covid-19 health screenings and other health measure prepared to welcome certain tourists.
The first 13 incoming tourists, who had flown from Indonesia, had undertaken preliminary temperature measurements as soon as they arrived at the terminal before going into the immigration and health document review process. The Covid-19 swab tests were also strictly conducted before they departed for the villa quarantine.
The other 46 foreigners arrived at the island a short time later and also had gone through the same process, according to the authorities. The vans for picking up the guests also provided hand sanitizer and a clear glass barrier between the passenger and the driver, under social distancing measures. All staff who provided the services were also wearing PPE clothes, gloves, facial masks, and hair hoods.
According to the villa quarantine plan, the foreigners will be separated and isolated for the first five days of state quarantine. They will then, after negative Covid-19 tests, be able to leave their rooms to enjoy the hotel facilities and amenities, such as swimming pools, spas, beaches, sports clubs, etc. for the remaining days at the villa. They will initially be staying and relaxing at the Sri Panwa hotel for two weeks.
Phichet Panapong, Deputy Governor of Phuket, said that the tourists would stay in Sri Panwa as an Organizational Quarantine.
“They were considered the pilot group who applied for the villa quarantine condition. However, we will act accordingly to strict health requirements under the supervision of the CCSA and the Public Health Ministry,” the Governor stated.
