A Pro-democracy group, titled “Walk Through the Sky: Return Power to the People”, ended their nearly 250-kilometer protest walk from Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday, March 7th, at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok.
The group started the 17th day of walking from Kasetsart Intersection at around 9:00 AM. and arrived at their final destination at around 3:00 P.M. as they also settled and started public activities and speeches by the demonstrators.
The activities throughout the day revolved around their core demands of the resignation of the Prime Minister, the amendment of the current Constitution, the reform of Thailand’s highest institution, and the release of detained prisoners being charged with Section 112 of the lese majeste law.
Prominent protest leader Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattararaksa gave a speech to conclude the event, urging all pro-democracy supporters to fight for freedom, true justice, and equality. Pai Dao Din called off the peaceful demonstration at around 9:00 PM. before asking the demonstrators to gather again this morning to march to the Criminal Court.
Today’s march started off at Ladoprao MRT station at 9:00 A.M. to give moral support for 18 protest leaders and members of the United Front of Thammasat University and Demonstration (UFTD), who will be hearing a Court decision over their pro-democracy gathering on September 19th and the 20th last year.
As of 11:00 AM., prosecutors have stated they will move forward with lese mejeste charge against three main UFTD leaders, including Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul, Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattararaksa, and Panupong “Mike Rayong” Jardnok, and sedition charges against the remaining 15 political activists.
It is now under the Court’s decision whether to detain them or temporarily release them on bail. As of 1:40 P.M. that decision is still being debated by Court officials and will be updated here once determined.
Update: As of 4:00 P.M. the three prominent protest leaders have been denied bail and taken into custody to await trial for their lese majeste charges.
