Nakhon Ratchasima –
A 92-year-old Thai man has tirelessly traveled more than 200 kilometers from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima to look for his 88-year-old former girlfriend whom he had not met in almost 70 years.
Winit Boonchuen started off his journey after hearing from a friend that his old lover, Thida Boonyasa, was still alive and had relocated to the Ubon Ratchathani province. He began searching for her address and contact information while he was in Bangkok and started to contact her once again.
Winit told reporters today, March 18th, that both of them began dating in Bangkok in 1949 for about 6 years before they had to break up as Thida had to go study in Nakhon Ratchasima.
“We were each other’s first love,” Winit stated. “Though we were apart, we kept writing each other’s letters and sending developed photos.”
However, he decided to stop writing and end the long-distance relationship by lying to his partner that he was about to get married. Thida then wrote her last letter, saying “Any blessing that Nit (Winit) wishes to make will come true.”
Winit continued: “The last time I saw her was in 1960 when she was traveling to Bangkok with her mother and her loved one. I did not dare to go talk to her but only looked at her from afar. That was about 61 years ago.”
The 92-year-old man still recognized little details of his former lover and kept almost everything she gave him, such as handkerchiefs and photos. He admitted that he had been missing the women all the time but in the end, everyone chose their own path. They both have their own families and responsibilities that needed to be taken care of.
“I just want to know if she is still alive and how she is doing, that’s all. I want to express concern as a friend as I don’t know how much time I have left,” Winit concluded.
Winit and associated Thai press reporters are still searching for his long-lost love and any updates will be provided here.
