A group of eight Chinese nationals were arrested at an apartment in Bangkok for allegedly operating illegal online gambling websites and money laundering in Thailand, the Combating Transnational Criminals and Illegal Immigrants Center (CTIC) of the Royal Thai Police announced today, March 22.
The arrest took place following a police investigation, exposing that a group of Chinese nationals had rented a room in Bangkok to work illegally without a work permit. They were allegedly using a computer system to create and run multiple online gambling websites.
The Bangkok police then raided the alleged location following a search warrant being issued. A Chinese worker, whose name was Xudong Zhao, and his seven colleagues, along with several computers, notebooks, and internet routers, were discovered in the room.
The group allegedly confessed to the police that they were hired by a Chinese employer who would give them orders directly from China. All of them were detained at the CTIC for further interrogation.
Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Police is expanding a financial investigation in their records in order to track connections that could lead to other related prosecutions in Thailand and in China.
