Thailand discovered 383 domestic cases among a total of 401 new Covid-19 Coronavirus infections with one additional death in the past 24 hours, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced this morning, March 23rd.

Thailand’s 92nd Covid-19 death was a 75-year-old Thai man from Bangkok with underlying health conditions of heart valve regurgitation, Alzheimer’s, and high blood pressure. He first sought a Covid-19 test on March 14th at a local hospital when he was having suspicious symptoms of high fever, coughing, and sore throat.

His condition became dramatically worse and he was pronounced dead on March 15th.

Regarding the local infections, the majority of 337 cases were reported during proactive case finding in local communities, particularly in local markets, factories, and migrant worker’s dormitories in Bangkok (only at Bang Khen’s immigration detention center) with 318, Bangkok with 5, Samut Sakhon with 12, and Nakhon Pathom with 2. All of them are being isolated in quarantined areas under the supervision of public health officials with no public exposure.

The 318 cases found at an Immigration Detention Center are under full investigation, according to authorities. They stressed that those in the center are not exposed to the general public and are essentially “sealed and secured”. The high number of cases, however, has sparked concern from various human rights groups on measures being taken to protect detainees from Covid-19. The Royal Thai Immigration Bureau, however, has stated that field hospitals are being set up and “all” precautions are taking place. Nearly all of the detainees, most of who tend to be young and healthy foreign migrants, are asymptomatic.

The other 46 infections were walk-in/hospital cases, including contact tracing, that were found in Bangkok with 29, Nakhon Pathom with 9, Samut Sakhon with 5, Khon Kaen with 1, Pathum Thani with 1, and Nonthaburi with 1.

As of today, 103 people fully recovered in the past 24 hours and have been released from field hospitals and quarantine centers. Thailand has now reached a total of 28,277 cases with 26,766 recoveries and a total of 92 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
