A total of 32 pro-democracy unarmed protesters were arrested yesterday evening, March 28th, during another dispersal at the “Thalufah Village” protest in front of the Government House after they re-staged a protest, showing resistance to the police dispersal earlier in the morning.
Deputy Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) commissioner Piya Tawichai told the Associated Press this morning, March 29th, that the arrest was conducted again as some groups of protesters ignored the police earlier dispersal and returned to the site in the afternoon to continue staging the protest, blocking traffic and, according to Piya, causing trouble to people living nearby.
As of yesterday, a total of 99 pro-democracy protesters were arrested. The first 67 protesters were captured in the early hours of yesterday morning as they violated a public order around mass gatherings in place to “stop the spread of Covid-19”, claimed by the Royal Thai Police. Another 32 demonstrators were captured after the regroup at the scene in the evening for reportedly violating the Emergency Decree, the Disease Control Act, and the Land Traffic Act, according to the MPB commissioner.
According to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, seven pro-democracy demonstrators were granted bail yesterday night. The 60 arrested in the morning had been taken to the Border Patrol Police Region 1 headquarters in Pathum Thani while another 32 people were taken to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
“Police received several complaints of loud noise and traffic, caused by the overnight protest. Most of them would initially be charged with violating the Communicable Disease Control Act and the Emergency Decree,” Police Major General Piya said.
Meanwhile, Thalufah Village protest organizers also announced another gathering at the Government House on March 30th at 2:00 P.M., when the cabinet ministers were scheduled to take official group photos.
