Phuket island is estimated, according to the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, to generate more than 84 billion baht in revenue by the end of the year after vaccinated tourists are welcomed to visit Thailand without mandatory quarantine, as recently approved by the Thai government.
Thanusak Phuengdej, President of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, revealed yesterday, March 31st, that the local Covid-19 vaccine allocation and the island re-opening were scheduled faster than expected as the Thai government finally, in his words, heard the outcry of Phuket local residents and business sectors.
Regarding the vaccine distribution, Phuket has already received the first lot of 4,000 doses in March. Another 100,000 doses will be arriving in April, 300,000 doses in May, 264,000 doses in June, and 264,000 doses in July. An overall of 932,000 doses will be able to cover a total local population of 417,402.
“In order to get ready for the strategy of the “Phuket Tourism Sandbox” to welcome foreign tourists by July 1st, the business and hospitality sectors are strongly encouraged to register their employees for the vaccination via www.ภูเก็ตต้องชนะ.com, starting this Saturday, March 27th to April 3rd,” Thanusak said.
The President further stated that if everything is running according to the plan, it is expected that about 100,000 vaccinated foreign tourists will visit Phuket in July as there will be a time for public relations for about 3 months prior to the island re-opening. And from July to December, it is expected to generate an income of approximately 84,000 billion baht.
He added: “As the world began distributing Covid-19 vaccines, many countries were preparing to accept foreign tourists to restore its devastating economy. If Thailand did not open its border by then, the country may face a long-term economic disruption.”
“Therefore, the people of Phuket must reunite to receive the vaccination in order to build a protective barrier and confidence among tourists as well as to make opportunities for Thailand to recover again.” The president concluded.
