Bangkok –

Royal Thai Police yesterday, March 31st, acknowledged all checkpoint areas nationwide are to return in advance of Songkran and to be set up according to the Royal Thai Police standards with transparency and honesty, starting April 1st.

No, it’s not an April Fool’s Joke. In advance of the Thai New Year, Thailand’s biggest holiday and travel period called Songkran, from April 10th to April 16th, checkpoints are returning have a lull for a period of time.

Police General Damrongsak Kittipraphat, Deputy national police chief, told the Associated Press that CCTV cameras must be installed in all checkpoints and surveillance areas, including traffic checkpoints, alcohol checkpoints, air pollution checkpoints, and criminal checkpoints, with a police officer who will be in charge of each area and monitor the situation.

Moreover, the Royal Thai Police also will provide the Traffic Police Checkpoint Control (TPCC) database to indicate the location of the checkpoints in order to acknowledge commanders and supervisors where the checkpoints are located in their authorities. All checkpoints, therefore, must be registered and approved by the commander.

The deputy chief stated: “Now, many checkpoints are ready. Some have already been set up in large cities such as Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Ratchasima. Hopefully, by April 1st, we would like to officially set up the checkpoints and enforce the law. If Bangkok is ready, the police may start them on April 1st as well,” the deputy chief stated.

“This time, the Royal Thai Police will ensure that the reinstallation of the checkpoint nationwide must be authorized by police supervisors under the same standard. And if there were any fraud or dishonesty reported from civilians in particular checkpoints, all of the related officers, including their superintendent, must be thoroughly investigated and questioned according to the law.” The Deputy Chief concluded.

Checkpoints had been suspended and reinstated several times over the last year, notes TPN media, due to concerns from the new National Police Chief over integrity concerns and complaints from civilians.
