Thailand’s “Jack the Ripper” sentenced to the death penalty for being guilty of committing murder of at least six victims

Khon Kaen –

The Khon Kaen provincial Criminal Court today, April 2nd, has sentenced a writ of execution for a man given the moniker of Thailand’s Jack the Ripper, Somkid Pumpuang, who was convicted of the murder of a 51-year-old woman and another five victims in the province in December 2019.

Somkid was arrested in Khon Kaen on December 17, 2019, for killing a hotel maid six months after being released from prison for similar crimes, after having served time in a Thai prison for 14 years.

Today’s court verdict has proved the defendant guilty under Section 289 of the Criminal Code for committing torture or acts of cruelty; Section 334 of theft; and Section 91 of premeditated murder. According to the Criminal Code, whoever commits murder on the other person by premeditation shall be punished with death.

He was also charged with 12-month imprisonment for burglary, 3-month imprisonment for moving or attempting to remove the body, and 16-month imprisonment for premeditated murder. However, the imprisonment was revoked as the court has already sentenced the defendant to the death penalty, which is the maximum penalty.

According to the court’s verdict, Somkid had continued committing the same crimes repetitively six times six months after he was released from prison for committing 5 cases of murder.

His behavior, according to the Thai Criminal Court, had proved that Somkid did not feel guilty of his wrongdoing and had a complete lack of mercy and that he was very dangerous to Thai society. Therefore, the Criminal Court did not reduce the penalty and only sentenced him with the death penalty.

It is unclear when the sentence would be carried out.
