Koh Samui provides second lot of 50,000 Covid-19 vaccine shots to its locals prior to planned island “reopening” in July

Surat Thani –

Koh Samui officials have provided another 50,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines in its second round of local distribution at several local hospitals today, April 4th, prior to the island, along with Phuket, planning to reopen to welcome selected vaccinated foreign tourists with reduced quarantine in July.

Teerasak Lomthongkham, director of the Koh Samui Hospital, told the Associated Press a second lot of Covid-19 vaccines will be distributed to 25,000 people, including high-risk medical and public health officers as well as hospitality personnel and employees. It is estimated that about 5,000 people will receive the vaccine per day and will finish by April 7th.

Ratchaporn Poolsawadee, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, further stated that the allocation is a part of the “Samui Silk” route, a plan to welcome the first group of selected vaccinated foreign tourists to the island on July 1st with only 7-day state quarantine.

He told the press: “The Koh Samui Tourism Association and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are now researching and keeping track of potential groups of vaccinated tourists from Europe, America, Australia, and China that would be a low-to-medium risk as we believed that most restaurants, tourist attractions, and hotel entrepreneurs are now ready for the island reopening.”

“Both tourists and locals can be reassured that the reopening is safe under the Samui Silk route. The plan will allow foreign tourists to arrive in Koh Samui and to perform state quarantine for 7 days. If the tourists are proved negative, then they are allowed to leave the local alternative state quarantine and to travel at designated locations in Samui while locals can be reassured that all tourists are disease-free.” Ratchaporn concluded.
