The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) held an urgent meeting with Bangkok authorities today, April 7th, warning that closing down the whole capital during the Songkran festival will cost a tremendous loss of more than five billion baht.
Sanan Angubolkul, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, spoke to the press after holding a meeting with Bangkok governor Asawin Kwanmuang and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to discuss the plan to potentially control the rapid spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus from the new cluster.
The chairman stressed during the meeting that any major city lockdown would have an impact on the economy of approximately five billion baht if it was implemented by the BMA. Rather than the lockdown, Bangkok authorities should only order the closure of certain types of business in particular areas as necessary in order to control the spread of the virus.
Moreover, the vaccination distribution plan for people in Bangkok was also discussed during the meeting. The BMA indicated that the current capacity of vaccine injection per day is now at around 5,000 to 10,000 people only. In order to complete the allocation, the authorities must provide the injection of 1.5 to 2 million doses for 30,000 to 50,000 people per day.
The Thai Chamber of Commerce, therefore, said that they will cooperate with the private sector to support the local injection for faster and more efficient operations, including funding if needed.
“The Thai Chamber of Commerce has coordinated with department stores and private hospitals in preparing the waiting and observing area before and after the injections. Drinking water, hospital beds, transportation for vaccine distribution, and ambulances will be provided as well as the medical volunteers for the injection operation. We will work cooperatively with the BMA to complete the plan by April before the BMA will begin mass vaccine allocation to the public in June,” Sanan concluded.
