Thailand reports 25 deaths and 350 injuries in total of 348 accidents during first day of Songkran festival

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) today, April 11th, reported 25 deaths on the first day of “seven dangerous days” of the Songkran holiday period.

DDPM Director-General Boontham Lertsukekasem this morning held a press conference to report road accidents during the Songkran festival 2021 under the road campaign “Happy Songkran, Safe driving, Stay safe from Covid-19”, with its first record on April 10th.

A total of 348 accidents, 25 deaths, and 350 injuries were recorded solely on Saturday, according to the report. The most common causes of road accidents were speeding, accountable for 31.61 percent of total accidents, followed by drunk driving with 22.99 percent.

The majority of 82.91 percent of accidents significantly involved motorcycles. Most of the accidents occurred on straight routes, accountable for 63.22 percent of total accidents. About 39.94 percent of them were on highways while 33.91 percent were in community villages. The most frequent time of accidents occurred between 16.01 – 20.00 hrs., accountable for 27.87 percent.

The province with the highest accidents and injuries is Phatthalung (20 accidents with 22 injuries) while the provinces with the highest fatalities are Bangkok, Chonburi, and Chiang Mai (2 each province).

The Director-General also stated that many highways and outbound traffic were heavy since yesterday night, particularly routes connecting to different regions. The DDPM also coordinated with related officials to facilitate all drivers and passengers as well as to set up checkpoints to monitor road traffic and to prevent the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus effectively.

“Heavy rains and thunderstorms are also reported in many parts of Thailand during Songkran, therefore everyone is being reminded to drive cautiously and safely, take care of themselves, follow health measures strictly to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” Boontham concluded.
