More than 7.87 million vehicles recorded traveling in and out of Bangkok during Songkran, Thailand’s Ministry of Transport reports

More than 7.87 million vehicles were recorded traveling in and out of Bangkok during the Songkran holiday, Thailand’s Ministry of Transport revealed yesterday, April 14th.

According to its cumulative data collected between the 10th and 14th of April, about 4.52 million people were using public transportation, which is 35.86 percent lower than the estimate but is 74.22 percent higher than the same period of the Songkran holiday last year (in which a near-total shutdown of domestic travel took place).

More than 7.87 million vehicles were recorded traveling in and out of Bangkok, which is also 30.22 percent lower than the estimate but is 34.67 percent higher than the same period of the Songkran holiday last year. The majority of 7,406,568 vehicles were private cars.

Regarding road accidents, there were 856 accidents, 107 deaths, 837 injuries reported during the Songkran festival so far, 77.36 percent of the accidents occurred on straight routes. Chonburi had the highest number of accidents with 35 occasions.

A total of 384 accidents involved motorcycles with 57 deaths and 431 injuries. The motorcycle-related accidents occurred most in Chiang Mai Province at 15 times. Two accidents were reported in public buses with 6 deaths and 11 injuries. Two were reported involving railroads with 1 death and 1 injury. A total of 9 accidents involved trucks with 11 deaths and 5 injuries, according to the Ministry data.
