National –
Thailand’s National Communicable Disease Committee (NCDC) is planning to introduce to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) a proposal to set the highest red-controlled areas in 18 high-risk provinces nationwide through the end of April.
The Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, revealed to the press this afternoon, April 15th, after chairing a meeting with the NCDC, that the committee is going to propose several restrictions in order to help prevent the domestic spread of the Covid-19 Coronavirus in Thailand, following a rocketing number of infections found from the recent outbreak from entertainment venues in Bangkok.
The restrictions to be proposed are as follows (Editor’s Note-These are only proposals at this point and may or may not be given final approval at further meetings.):
- To apply the designation of red, or highest-controlled Covid-19 areas in 18 provinces, namely Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, Samut Prakan, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Sakhon, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nonthaburi, Songkhla, Tak, Udon Thani, Suphanburi, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, and Khon Kaen. Additionally, orange-controlled areas in 59 provinces.
- To limit the opening and closing hours of restaurants for dine-in in the red-controlled areas by 9:00 P.M. and in orange-controlled areas by 11:00 PM. All restaurants must prohibit alcohol selling and drinking while dining in and must follow social distancing restrictions strictly.
- To close pubs, bars, and entertainment establishment venues nationwide.
- To close amusement parks as well as game zones, playgrounds, and similar attractions in all department stores
- To ask for public cooperation not to hold parties and any social gathering activities
- To ask for public cooperation to refrain from teaching and learning in a classroom at any educational institutions with groups of more than 50 people
- To ask for private sectors to announce “Work From Home” for their employees
- To ask for public cooperation to wear face masks at all times and refrain from traveling to crowded places
- To approve the authority to allow traveling between provinces upon the decision of the Provincial Communicable Disease Committee in each province. (Essentially, encouraging governors to enact provincial traveling rules.)
The NCDC will ask the CCSA to enforce all measures until the end of April. Meanwhile, the Public Health Minister confirmed that this is not a lockdown but it is rather a health measure to control the pandemic after Songkran and discouraged the usage of the word lockdown, stating there were no plans to strictly lockdown and require people to stay at home.
“It is predicted that the number of domestic infections will significantly rise after people have returned from traveling during Songkran. Therefore, the measures that the NCDC is going to introduce to the CCSA is effective and is believed to help improve the infections situation by May,” Anutin stated.
A full meeting of the CCSA and NCDC is set via video-conferencing on Friday, April 16th, at 1:30 P.M. Decisions may take place as early as tomorrow afternoon. TPN media will keep you updated on all the recent developments.
