Thailand reports 29 deaths in total from 313 road accidents on the sixth day of the “seven dangerous days” of Songkran period

Thailand’s Ministry of Interior reported a total of 29 deaths, 310 injuries, and 313 road accidents on the sixth day of “seven dangerous days” of the Songkran holiday period, with its record on April 15th.

Unsit Sampuntharat, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, held a press conference for six consecutive days this morning, April 16th, to announce daily records of road accidents during the Songkran festival.

According to the reports, a total of 313 accidents, 29 deaths, and 310 injuries were recorded solely on Wednesday. The most common causes of road accidents were drunk driving, accountable for 31.31 percent of total accidents, followed by overspeeding with 30.35 percent.

The majority of 88.79 percent of accidents significantly involved motorcycles. Most of the accidents occurred on straight routes, accountable for 61.66 percent of total accidents. About 43.13 percent of them were recorded in the community villages while 30.67 percent were on national highways.

The most frequent time of accidents occurred between 16.01 – 20.00 hrs., accountable for 25.56 percent. The age of injuries and fatalities were mostly between 40 and 49 years old, accountable for 15.63 percent of all accidents reported yesterday.

The province with the highest accidents is Nakhon Sri Thammarat with 15 accidents. The highest number of injuries was reported in Prachin Buri with 15 cases while the provinces with the highest fatalities were reported in Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Rayong, and Nong Khao with two deaths in each province.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) stated that a lot of cars have been traveling back to Bangkok since yesterday. Therefore, the department has ordered related departments in coordinated areas to survey the risky areas with high injury and mortality rates. More traffic checkpoints and traffic officials will also be deployed to tighten surveillance at several straight risky routes to prevent possible road accidents during heavy traffic.

Accumulatively, a total of 238 deaths, 2,116 injuries, and 2,113 accidents were recorded on the fifth day. The most accidents were reported in Nakhon Sri Thammarat with 91 times. The highest injuries were also recorded in Nakhon Sri Thammarat with 96 injuries while the highest fatalities were reported in Chiang Mai with 9 deaths.
