Bangkok –

Two prominent pro-democracy activists, Jatupat “Pai Daodin” Boonpattararaksa and Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, were granted temporary bail by Bangkok’s Criminal Court this afternoon, April 23rd, under a condition that they must not do any actions that offended the monarchy.

Both of them were arrested earlier this year for alleged defamation of the King and the royal family under Section 112 of the Criminal Code, also known as Thailand’s lese majeste charges, and other similar charges following an overnight pro-democracy demonstration at the Thammasat University on September 2020.

A group of pro-democracy activists had gathered in front of the Criminal Court as of 2:00 P.M. to give moral support to the pro-democracy protest leaders before the Court had officially issued a temporary release at around 3:00 PM. for a surety of 200,000 baht each.

According to the temporary release, Pai Daodin and Somyot are prohibited from offensive references to the monarchy as well as participating in activities that intentionally discredit the highest institution. They are not allowed to leave the country during the Court’s investigation. Both men reportedly agreed to the terms and conditions prior to their release.
