RECAP: Thailand discovers 1,902 new Covid-19 domestic infections with 18 additional deaths, with vast majority in Bangkok from crowded communities

Thailand discovered 1,902 domestic infections among a total of 1,911 new, confirmed Covid-19 cases with 18 additional deaths in the past 24 hours, CCSA spokesperson Taweesilp Visanuyothin announced this morning, May 6th.

The fatalities were 5 men and 13 women from Bangkok (6), Samut Prakan (3), Nonthaburi (2), Chiang Mai (2), Samut Sakhon (2), Pathum Thani (1), Yala (1), and Singburi (1). The age range was between 45 and 100 years old.

Most of them were reported with underlying health conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, obesity, chronic lung disease, thyroid disease, past stroke, chronic liver disease, cancer, and amnesia. One of them was a bedridden patient. The other two refused to expose their health conditions.

Regarding domestic infections, the first group of 739 local infections was discovered in Bangkok. Eight of them were reportedly connected to entertainment venues, 19 were from community markets and villages, 259 were from being in close contact with confirmed infected patients, and the other 453 infections were connected to other risky places. Other risky places are generally those such as private house parties, drinking circles, workplaces without sufficient social distancing measures like some construction or factories, densely packed communities like migrant workers camps, crowded markets or temples, and similar locations.

The second group includes 559 cases that were reported in Bangkok’s vicinity. Three of them were reportedly connected to entertainment venues, 45 were from community markets and villages, 367 were from being close contact with confirmed infected patients, and the other 144 cases were connected to other risky places.

The last group includes 604 domestic infections that were found in other provinces. Two of them were connected to entertainment venues, 29 were from community markets and villages, 421 were from being in close contact with confirmed infected patients, and 152 of them were connected to other risky places. The majority of the group was discovered in Nonthaburi with 273, followed by Samut Prakan with 143 (mostly in a factory), Chonburi with 76, and Samut Sakhon with 65.

As of today, 2,435 people fully recovered in the past 24 hours and have been released from field hospitals and quarantine centers. Thailand has now reached a total of 76,811 cases with 46,795 recoveries and a total of 336 deaths since the start of the pandemic. About 17,155 people received their first shot of a Covid-19 vaccination and another 11,603 people received their second shot yesterday, marking a total number of 1,601,833 vaccinated people in Thailand who have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
