American Covid-19 patient temporarily flees hospital in Amnat Charoen after not being allowed to share the same room with his Thai infected wife

Amnat Charoen –

A 51-year-old American national who was tested positive for Covid-19 fled a local hospital in Amnat Charoen on Sunday, May 9th, after he was not allowed to sleep in the same room with his infected wife, local media is reporting.

The foreign patient was receiving Covid-19 treatment at the Chanuman hospital in the Chanuman district when he asked medical officials to move his bed into the same room as his Thai wife, who was also being treated at the same hospital for Covid-19 infection.

However, the doctors declined his request. He reportedly left the hospital without permission and furiously went home afterward. The reason for the request being declined was not given by the hospital.

The fugitive Covid-19 patient was spotted walking on the Chanuman to Ban Nikhom Plaeng 4 Road by concerned local residents before law enforcement officials began searching and found him at home. The medical team eventually persuaded him to return to the hospital in the end. The name of the man was withheld due to his current status as a Covid-19 patient.

The incident caused fear from local residents as he could have been spreading the Covid-19 infections to others and an outpouring of angry comments on Thai social media, with some calling for the deportation of the unidentified man. The Chanuman district chief, therefore, has ordered to tighten up security at the hospital in order to prevent the reoccurrence.

Chanuman officials did not comment on if the man would face any legal charges or repercussions for the act of defiance.
