Bangkok –
Pro-democracy activists, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak and Chaiamorn “Ammy the Bottom Blues” Kaewwiboonpan, have been granted bail by the Criminal Court this afternoon, May 11th, after being detained for months in Bangkok Remand Prison over lese mejeste charges.
Meanwhile, the bail hearing for Panupong “Mike Rayong” Jadnok has been postponed from today as the court requires him to take another Covid-19 test.
Similar to other released activists, both Penguin and Ammy must refrain from participating in any activities, organizing or lead any protests, and hosting any speeches that are offensive to the royal institution nor leave the country without the court’s permission.
Penguin has been detained among other pro-democracy activists for about 91 days since February and was on hunger strike for 57 days, severely weakening his health before being taken for urgent medical assistance last week.
Ammy was detained and pending trial on lese mejeste and arson charges for 68 days since early March after allegedly set fire to a portrait of the royal family in front of Khlong Prem Central Prison in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district on February 28.
Both men have reportedly agreed to the conditions.
Recently, the Criminal Court also released several pro-democracy individuals, including Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul last Thursday and Jatupat “Pai Daodin” Boonpattararaksa and Somyot Pruksakasemsuk last month under similar conditions.
