The Ministry of Public Health is planning to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to Bangkok authorities to proceed with inoculation onto 70 percent of Bangkok’s population in order to create herd immunity, starting in June.
Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), revealed yesterday, May 17th, that the Ministry of Public Health together with Bangkok Metropolitan Authorities (BMA) had planned to provide Covid-19 vaccinations in areas highly affected by the epidemic.
The director-general stated: “A large lot of Covid-19 vaccines will be arriving in Bangkok in June to be injected at 70 percent of Bangkok’s population, or about 5 million people. The injection is planned to be completed within 2 months, with approximately 2.5 million people per month.”
The injection in Bangkok will need cooperation from both the public and private sectors, he added. Meanwhile, the inoculation will also proceed in other provinces in order to make it as approachable as possible for people nationwide and to build herd immunity. Provinces that are deemed economically critical to tourism, like Phuket and Chonburi, will have priority.
Meanwhile, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang stated today, May 18th, that proposed ‘walk-in’ vaccination measures will not be applied in the capital, reasoning that the measure could possibly spread Covid-19 infections as a large number of people who would be gathering in a vaccination center.
The governor, instead, recommended registration for Covid-19 inoculation via application-based or web-based channels, such as the “Morprompt” application, in order for the authorities to provide the best assistance and service to a certain number of people every day. An English version is reportedly in development and coming soon.
Aswin said: “‘The Morprompt’ application is currently opened for the group of the elderly at the age of over 60 years old and patients with 7 health conditions (chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, past stroke, cancer, diabetes, and obesity). Bangkok residents between 18 and 59 years old are allowed to register via a web-based system for appointments at 25 vaccination centers outside the hospitals.”
“The BMA will also be coordinating the Thai Chamber of Commerce and convenience stores such as 7-Eleven across the city to provide the registration service so that people can register and book a place in the queue in all areas.”
