Royal Thai Police announces major crackdown on illegal gun sales online in seven different areas in Bangkok

Bangkok –

The Crime Suppression Division of the Royal Thai Police (CSD) today, June 10th, reported a major crackdown on illegal gun sales online in Bangkok which were believed to be connected to a weapon smuggling network with a circulating fund not less than a hundred million baht.

Three suspects, Sippawut Promprasit, 28, Traipob Lalert, 57, and Natthapong Sri-ngarm, 42, were arrested under arrest warrants from the Criminal Court on charges of jointly trafficking and possessing unregistered firearms or explosives.

Upon the raid, a total of 23 short and long guns and more than 1,000 cartridges of ammunition were found and confiscated in seven areas around Bangkok. An alleged customer who reportedly bought a weapon from the group was also captured, along with a shotgun.

Police Colonel Jirapob Phuridet, crime suppression superintendent, told the Thai media that the suspects were believed to be a part of illegal weapon sales in a black market where firearm dealers would sell their weapons to customers, using online trading platforms.

He stated: “They would set up a secret group conversation for free firearms trading among people who shared the same interests while avoiding police scrutiny. Most of the firearms that were distributed tended to be in hands of freelance gunmen and members of drug trafficking networks, which could lead to serious crimes.”

“The overall investigation by the Crime Suppression Division began in May. So far, a total of nine suspects have been arrested, 154 pistols and rifles along with 14 explosive devices and ammunition were seized. It is expected that the arrests were all connected in the same network, with a circulating fund of more than 100 million baht.” Jirapob concluded.
