Local villagers in Chachoengsao build enormous phallus for rain-making ceremony

Chachoengsao –

Local villagers in the Yothaka Sub-district of Chachoengsao province on Wednesday, June 9th, has built an enormous phallus on the road as a part of the local rain-making ceremony.

The giant penis-shaped amulet, or “Palad Khik” in Thai, was molded and installed before local farmers began praying for more rain for their crops and for better water quality in the neighborhood as they were concerned that the supplied water on the local canals was too salty.

According to local village chief Chamnan Kenthongdaeng, the ceremony is done annually as a part of their superstitious belief. A similar ritual had also been performed last year and rainfall occurred in a pleasant amount throughout the rainy season.

“The temporary structure would not cause any traffic jams as it was built on a dead-end road. It will be removed as soon as the seasonal rain comes,” the chief added.

Meanwhile, local residents are allowed to come to pray to the phallus and making offerings.
