Bangkok –

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is planning to consider a full opening of restaurants in Bangkok if officially proposed by the Public Health Ministry at a general meeting this Friday, the CCSA operations director revealed to the press today, June 15th.

General Natthapon Nakpanich, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) and operations director of the CCSA, stated that the CCSA is ready to consider the full opening of all dine-in operations. However, the idea must be proposed by the Ministry of Public Health as the CCSA does not have the authority to propose the idea for committee consideration.

The proposal may be introduced at the big CCSA meeting by the Ministry of Public Health this Friday, June 18th, according to the operations director.

“What we do is consider what the Public Health Ministry and other related agencies have proposed for official approval or disapproval. We have to listen to the Ministry before discussing with the relevant ministries. If the Public Health Ministry is proposing a full operation in restaurants in the capital, then the CCSA is willing to consider,” Natthapon added.

When being asked if fully opening restaurants and selling alcoholic beverages in the restaurants should be implemented as the number of Covid-19 infections is still high, the director continued to stress that it all depends on the proposals from the Ministry of Public Health.

This comes as prominent restaurant associations, alcohol associations, and musician/entertainment organizations have officially appeal to the government to consider relaxations of policies or further direct financial aid. Some provinces and areas of the country have not had a single covid-19 case or a single person in the hospital for Covid-19 in months, yet alcohol remains banned at restaurants countrywide as does a mandated closure of entertainment venues like bars and nightclubs, regardless of local or regional Covid-19 cases.

The majority of Covid-19 cases are currently in the capital and mostly centered around construction sites, migrant worker communities, and prisons where the population is under strict control.

TPN media notes these are only discussions and proposals and no guarantee that any easing or lifting of restrictions will take place.
