Thai Prime Minister aims for full country reopening for vaccinated foreign tourists within 120 days

Bangkok –

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha addressed via a national broadcast this evening, June 16th, that the government aims to fully reopen the whole country to vaccinated foreign tourists within the next 120 days.

Within 120 days from today, fully vaccinated tourists against the Covid-19 virus will be welcomed to visit the country without conducting a quarantine, according to the plan. Thai people who are planning to travel abroad will not have to go through complicated conditions and measures prior to departure and return as well.

By doing so, every eligible resident in Thailand must at least receive the first shot of the Covid-19 vaccines as soon as possible to reduce the risk of individual infections.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that the “Phuket Sandbox” in July will potentially pave the way for the country’s reopening to vaccinated tourists before Thailand would adopt such plans into other tourism destinations. He stressed the Sandbox was a “test” before the main reopening of the country with fewer restrictions and regulations.

Meanwhile, the government has signed contracts to procure an additional 105.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines from six manufacturers, namely, Pfizer Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinovac, and Sinopharm, by the end of the year.

“I know that my decision of reopening the country within 120 days of today may be a risk, but we have thoroughly considered many factors and points of view from multiple sectors and we must internally prioritize for our economic recovery so that the country can move on,” he stated. “I believe that it is time for all of us to accept the risk together.”

Having Covid-19 vaccines locally produced in a factory would help to deal with the disease in the long term, The PM added. This will also enable all of us to access vaccines as long as the country needs them, which also helps the country move forward potentially and successfully.

The announcement was seen as a major step towards reopening Thailand to tourism which is a substantial part of its economy.
