Senior officials from the Phuket International Airport today, June 17th, observed the preparation of welcoming international passengers according to the “Phuket Sandbox” plan on July 1st prior to the Thai Prime Minister’s visit next Friday.
The preparation was observed on the second floor of the international terminal building under a hypothetical situation that there were passengers arriving from abroad and entering the building at Gate 11.
Upon arrival, a preliminary health screening will be performed by checking body temperature. Officials from the International Communicable Disease Control Department would check mandatory documents, including passport information and proof of full vaccination of an eligible Covid-19 vaccine, Covid-19 insurance, and SHA hotel reservation at the checkpoint. The arrivals then would go into the immigration area for a secondary document inspection, pick up luggage, go through customs for a final document inspection, and then perform Covid-19 swab tests before leaving the airport by designated vehicles to the reserved hotel.
Speaking after, airport director Thani Chuangchu told reporters that the overall rehearsal was in place without any difficulties. It is expected that about 1,000 passengers from five confirmed airlines are scheduled to arrive on the island on the first day of the reopening.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha and his delegation are scheduled to visit Phuket to observe the readiness of the “Phuket Sandbox” project next Friday, June 25th. They will be departing from Bangkok at around 8:30 AM.
Once they arrived, the Prime Minister will visit the preparation and health screening procedures of foreign tourists at the international terminal before leaving for the Angsana Laguna Phuket Hotel in the Thalang District to visit vaccination centers and to discuss ways to restore Phuket’s domestic economy with local entrepreneurs as well as to hear the overall concept of the “Phuket Tourism Sandbox” from the provincial governor and related government agencies.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister will visit Ao Por Pier and the Phuket Checkpoint to witness the health screening procedures before returning to Bangkok.
