Two German nationals arrested in southern Thailand for allegedly being involved in drug trafficking in Europe

Southern Thailand –

Two German nationals were arrested in the southern provinces of Thailand today, July 6th, 2021, after being wanted by an Interpol Red Notice for allegedly being involved in drug trafficking in European countries.

Immigration police commissioner Sompong Chingduang announced today, July 6th, that the Immigration police has captured fugitives Alex Kartun, 42, in Koh Phangan of Surat Thani and Alexander Wolfien, 38, in Phuket after they were wanted by the German authorities for an alleged drug trafficking case.

Upon the arrest, a 42-year-old Russian national, Victor Thubnikov, who was also discovered at the scene of one of the two arrested men and described by Immigration police as an associate of the men, was caught with cannabis and charged with possession of category 5 of narcotics.

According to the authorities, the two suspects were leaders of a drug-producing and trafficking gang that conspired to sell across European countries. After being wanted by the German police, they both allegedly fled to Thailand where they were reportedly living for many years.

The investigation took about 2 months after the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Thailand had given notification of the case to the Thai Immigration Police after an investigation by German officials reportedly led them to Thailand. The suspects were reportedly living with a group of Russian friends who assisted them and kept an eye on officers who came for surveillance in the area.

Both German suspects are now detained and will be taken to the Attorney General’s Office to coordinate the extradition for the requesting state, the commissioner stated. The Russian suspect, meanwhile, faces charges for drug possession of a category type 5 drug in Thailand.
