Thailand’s national committee on communicable diseases this afternoon, July 12th, has announced four medical measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 coronavirus, including having frontline medical staff be given a booster shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine this week.
Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as chairman of the National Communicable Disease Committee, revealed that the Committee has decided to move forward with additional health measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic, prioritizing the booster dose to frontline medical personnel within this July with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The implementation followed the reports that more than 600 personnel, who are already fully vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, have been found infected with Covid-19. A young nurse in a private hospital also reportedly passed away despite having completed her vaccinations. The majority of the staff infected, however, had mild to asymptomatic reactions, and the percentage of vaccinated staff infected was low overall. Despite this, however, the National Communicable Disease Committee wants to step up protective measures for medical staff.
The Committee also approved of the use of mixed vaccinations, with the first dose of Sinovac and AstraZeneca as the second, to increase the efficacy against the Delta Coronavirus variant to medical frontliners.
Rapid Antigen Tests have also been approved for medical use at 300 medical facilities so far, according to the Minister. The personal use of the kits at home is still under the revision of the Bangkok Communicable Disease Committee and will be followed afterward. A final decision on purchase for private use was not made this afternoon.
Home Isolation (HI) and Community Isolation (CI) would be in effect to allow infected patients with mild or no symptoms to quarantine within certain local facilities with medical treatment under the supervision of the National Health Security Office (NHSO). More details on this will be released in the near future.
This measure is to potentially increase the number of available hospital beds at hospitals and field hospitals for orange and red groups of infected patients who are suffering from more critical health conditions after the demand for hospital beds, particularly in Bangkok, remains high.
