Protest leader Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul has been denied bail by the Criminal Court this afternoon, November 15th, over the ‘lésé majéste’ charges for wearing a cropped top during a symbolic protest at a shopping center in December 2020.
According to the ruling, the defendant had previously acted in a similar manner in many cases. The defendant, who was temporarily released, continued to repeat the offense which violates the bail conditions of the Criminal Court. The public prosecutor, therefore, has requested the temporary revocation of thier bail.
The reading says: “If the defendant was temporarily released, the defendant may possibly commit another similar offense. Therefore, a temporary release is denied and the petition must be dismissed.”
On December 20th, 2020, pro-democracy protesters, led by Rung Panusaya, Penguin Chiwarak, and Mike Panupong, were protesting against Thailand’s ‘lésé majéste’ charges, or Section 112 of the Criminal Code, by symbolically wearing cropped top shirts and walking around Siam Paragon Department Store.
The protest leaders along with five other organizers were sued for the act over the royal defamation charges, following the complaints of pro-institution “Thai Pak Dee” group representatives in June.
