Phuket public health authorities today, November 24th, reported two concerning Covid-19 clusters in the Phuket area among groups in Soi Bangla establishments in Patong and on-site studying students.
Dr. Withita Jangiam, the Deputy Director from the Vachira Phuket Hospital, revealed that the number of Covid-19 infections had started to increase in Phuket from 50 cases to 80 cases. And as of yesterday, Nov. 23rd, the total number of Covid-19 infections was reported at 105 cases.
Out of 105 cases on the island, it was found that the majority came from two main clusters. One of them was an ongoing infection among groups of students who were gathered for on-site school learning. Most of the students reportedly got infected by their family members which also occurred in many parts of Phuket since schools were opened on the island.
The Deputy Director stated to the press: “More and more students were reportedly infected, especially when the schools were open for on-site classes where the students were attending class and playing in groups. Relevant agencies, including schools and provincial education authorities, are now monitoring the situation and jointly finding solutions and measures to prevent and control infections among students. We are encouraging students not to socialize with each other when classes are out of session, however, this is not an easy measure.”
Another Covid-19 cluster was reported on Soi Bangla in Patong city among groups of tourists and workers at entertainment establishments. As of Monday, November 22nd, a total of 391 people, tourists, and venue employees who were members of at-risk groups had tested for Covid-19 via ATK screening. Of that, 24 cases were found infected, accounting for 6.14 percent.
Business venues on Soi Bangla had previously mutually agreed that they would close their business for at least three days for major Covid-19 cleaning if there were at least two Covid-19 infections found. Meanwhile, they vowed to abide by the provincial preventive measures to prevent the Covid-19 spread. This has led to reports of stricter checks on patrons and staff for Covid-19 vaccination status in the past few days.
