Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDOM) today, December 30th, reported a total of 362 accidents, with 39 deaths and 362 injuries, on the first day of Seven Deadly Days of driving during the New Year season.
DDPM Director-General Boontham Lertsukekasem revealed the number of road accident statistics for December 29th, which is the first day of the campaign called “New way of life, Drive safely, No accidents” starting December 29th, 2021 until January 4th, 2022.
The first day of the Seven Deadly Days records a total of 362 accidents, with 39 deceased and 362 injured, which were mostly caused by excessive speeding (34.60 percent), followed by drunk driving (23.80 percent). About 81.30 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles.
83.90 percent of road accidents occurred most on a straight segment of road while 36.80 percent were recorded on national highways, followed by 34.60 percent at provincial subdistricts and local villages.
Most accidents occurred between 15.01 and 18.00 HRS. at 22.70 percent. The highest number of injuries and deaths were involved in persons at the age of 50 years old or above, at 29.94 percent, according to the summary.
The Director-General further stated that the province with the highest number of accidents was Ratchaburi (13 times). The province with the highest fatalities was Nakhon Ratchasima (5 people) while the province with the highest number of injuries was recorded in Loei (14 people).
The Department warned all motorists to strictly comply with traffic laws at all times and be kind to those who also share the same route. Surveillance areas and checkpoints to prevent the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus are deployed to increase the intensity of vehicle inspections and driver readiness. All motorists are reminded to wear facial masks, maintain social distance, and wash hands to reduce the risk of infection during the New Year festival.
