Independent candidate Chadchart Sittipunt is likely to become the 17th Bangkok governor after the votes were cast for the candidate by a landslide since the very first hour of counting, according to the unofficial results.
During the first hour of counting after the polling stations were closed at 5:00 PM., Chadchart received more than 100,000 votes from all 50 districts. And as of 9:10 PM., his votes have unofficially reached over 1,000,000, accountable for 90 percent of the counted eligible voters.
Other prominent candidates – namely Move Forward’s Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, Democrat’s Suchatvee Suwansawat, independent Sakoltee Phattiyakul, and former governor Aswin Kwanmuang – had reportedly conceded defeat and congratulated the incoming winner while promising that their councilors are willing to work with him.
Regarding the councilor results, the majority, or 17 out of 50 seats, is likely to belong to candidates of the Pheu Thai party, followed by 15 from the Move Forward party, and 8 from the Democrat Party, according to the unofficial tally at 10:00 PM.
Chardchart, who held a public monitor screening for counting votes at Stadium One in the Pathum Wan district, said that he was ready to work with councilors from all parties as an independent candidate and will become the Bangkok governor for everyone, including those who voted and did not vote for him.
He also gave a speech, saying that he seeks an end to the divisions and unity among political parties and the people of Bangkok as he felt everyone had to move forward for the city’s progress.
The frontrunner said: “We must overcome divisions. I think we have to be united and walk together eventually…We can disagree but we shouldn’t be angry or hate one another…If the Election Commission officially announces the result, I’m ready to be the governor for everyone.”
As of 10:10 PM., Chardchart has unofficially broken the record for the most votes a Bangkok governor candidate has ever gotten with 1,282,191 votes, defeating the 1,256,349 votes of Sukhumbhand Paribatra in the 2013 election.
