Two killed in fire after pickup truck overturns in Bangkok

National —

Two victims were killed in a fire after their pickup truck allegedly carrying chemical substances overturned in Bangkok this past weekend.

Pol. Lt. Col. Sarawut Suksawat from the Bangpongpang Police Station responded to a fatal road accident on Rama 3rd Road in Bangkok’s Yannawa District at 6:21 AM on July 2nd.

The accident occurred on a four-lane road near a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) route. According to eyewitnesses, one pickup truck caught fire after flipping over a barrier separating the BRT route from the main road. Bangpongpang rescuers took nearly 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze but could not save the two male victims who reportedly ejected from their vehicle during the crash and got incinerated to death. Both victims could not be identified as their documents were all burnt.

According to CCTV footage, the victims were driving at high speed before colliding with a small barrier separating a BRT route and overturned. The truck then instantly burst into flames possibly due to chemical substances in blue tanks that the victims were transporting on their truck’s bed, as seen scattered around the scene.

A retail store owner, who asked the press for her name to be withheld, who witnessed the accident, told TPN media that the blaze was so intense that it heated her gate. She claimed that she called a fire station, but charity rescue workers arrived before them. She also chastised Bangkok authorities for building a barrier that was too small and hard to see at night, causing many accidents at the same spot for a long time.

Initially, both victims were taken to Chulalongkorn Hospital for elaborate forensic examination to identify them and to await their relatives. The chemicals being carried by the pickup truck had also not been officially identified by relevant authorities as of press time.
