British tourist on honeymoon and Thai man drown after tourist goes swimming despite red flags at Kata Beach, Thai man tried to save tourist’s life

Kata, Phuket –

Two people have been pronounced dead after a male British tourist who was on his honeymoon drowned as well as a Thai man who was trying to help save the British tourist’s life at Kata Beach in a red flag area yesterday (July 14th).

Emergency responders were notified of the incident at 5:00 P.M. at the Kata Noi Beach in the Karon sub-district, Mueang Phuket district.

Emergency teams arrived at the beach to find the male British tourist, 34 (MR.ALI MOHAMMED MIAN) and the male Thai tourist, 55 (Mr. Surasit Pongaohapan). Both men had been already pulled from the water by lifeguards. They were rushed to a local hospital where they both were tragically pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Colonel Eakkachai Siri of the Phuket Tourist Police told the Phuket Express, “The British tourist arrived in Phuket on July 9th with his wife on their honeymoon trip. They checked-in at their hotel in Karon on July 12th. The Thai tourist was with his wife and son. They checked-in at a hotel in Karon yesterday (July 14th).”

“The British tourist was struggling in the waves while the Thai tourist who was nearby in the water tried to help him. Both of them were hit by multiple consecutive large waves and went underwater. Lifeguards entered the ocean before pulling the men out.” Lt. Col Eakkachai explained.

“There are four lifeguards on the 850-meter long Kata Noi Beach patrolling every day. Yesterday, red flags and no swimming signs were placed along the beach due to strong waves. Lifeguards warned both men not to go swimming but they refused and still went into the water.” Lt. Col Eakkachai stated.

Only days before two foreign tourists also drowned in Koh Chang. In this incident, the tourists also entered a red flag area and went swimming.

Thai police and authorities continue to urge the public to follow directions from relevant agencies and not go swimming during red flag periods or rough weather.
