The Rural Doctor Society joined several NGO political groups to issue a statement on Thursday, August 18th, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Cha-O’Cha as soon as his eight-year ministry ends on August 24th.
Previously, groups from the Thai Lawyers Association and the Campaign for Popular Democracy (CPD) had brought up the end of Prayut’s ministry in late August.
As of Thursday, the Rural Doctor Society released a similar statement which said it is time for the Prime Minister to step down with dignity in line with the 2017 Constitution.
According to Section 158 of the 2017 Thai Constitution, the Prime Minister shall not hold office for more than eight years in total, whether or not holding a consecutive term – in order to prevent a monopoly on power in politics for too long.
The statement reads: “During this remaining week, the Rural Medical Club encourages all organizations in Thai society to pressure the Prime Minister by joining the “8 years, that’s enough” campaign and make it a trend.”
“Thailand still has a lot of good and potential people who can serve as the Prime Minister. May Prime Minister Prayut abide by the rule of Democracy and step down from the position to pave the way for Thailand to move forward and give democracy a chance to grow in this country.” The statement concluded.
