Forestry officer trampled to death by wild elephant intruding on resident’s plantation in Chanthaburi on Wednesday

A forestry officer was killed after being attacked by a wild elephant at a longan orchard in the Pong Nam Ron district of Chanthaburi province at around midnight of Wednesday, September 14th.

Deputy District Chief Mongkol Lertphonthip along with officers from several national parks and rescue volunteers arrived at the scene around 00:40 AM. after being notified to the incident by the Pong Nam Ron subdistrict village headman.

The male body was found and later identified as Somphop Sri-Ngam, 42, who was a forestry officer from the Khlong Khrua Wai Wildlife Sanctuary. Several wounds of elephant attacks were found all over his body. Elephant footprints, dungs, and traces of food hunting were also discovered all over the scene of the incident.

According to Somphop’s colleague, the officer was patrolling the area to check the traces of wild elephants that reportedly come looking for food at the longan plantation before he was reportedly attacked by an elephant while on duty.

His body was initially taken for autopsy while officials from the Pong Nam Ron District Administration, the Khlong Khrua Wai Wildlife Sanctuary, and related agencies would investigate and monitor the herd of elephants who intruded the resident’s plantation before planning to push them back to the forest.

Local media also reported that this was the second tragic death being killed by a wild elephant this month after the first case was a 66-year-old monk on September 11th.
